GNDC Small Business Development Center (SBDC) – Regional Director

Position Overview:

The GNDC SBDC Regional Director is responsible for providing business and entrepreneurial counseling  services to small business owners and entrepreneurs within the GNDC region of Valley, Roosevelt, Daniels,  Sheridan, McCone, Garfield, and Richland Counties. This position will contribute to business startups, business  expansion, job creation/retention, and capital formation for entrepreneurs and business owners in the GNDC  region. This position is employed by the host organization (GNDC), who is under contract with the Montana  Department of Commerce, the host organization for the Montana SBDC Network under a Cooperative  Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and is responsible for achieving outcomes  designated annually through contract, by the SBA.  

The SBDC Regional Director will be part of an experienced team of GNDC business and economic developers  responsible for designing, planning, and implementing business development programming, personal business  counseling, and education and training sessions to advance the goals of the SBDC and the GNDC  Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). The position will work in tandem with the GNDC  Native American Business Center (NABC), Food & Ag Development Center (FADC), GNDC lending office and  other Montana SBDC’s to leverage existing resources and partnerships to ensure SBDC client success. 

Business Development & Counseling:

  • Recruit, manage, and develop a pipeline of small business clients that can benefit from business  counseling and assistance. 
  • Manage client intake and reporting processes, with a minimum goal of 10 client meetings/week (annual number of client counseling goals are set through contract with the Montana Department of  Commerce). 
  • Assist clients with loan financing packaging, applying for business development grants and other  professional business assistance.
  • Continually learn ways to innovate and design improvements to business development methods.
  • Ensure clients improve their operations with business planning, development strategies, financial  review and analysis, marketing assistance, managing a business, cash flow management, business  projections, financing, human resources and more. 
  • Conduct surveys and client outreach for going SBDC reporting and quality metrics.
  • Collaborate with other SBDC counselors to improve the program and processes for helping small  businesses.  

Qualifications (Experience/Education):

  • A college Degree; and/or five years of direct professional experience with business operations, financial statement and fiscal controls, accounting, business operations, and marketing and communications.  
  • Expertise in Excel creating business projections, financial statements, and business fiscal management.
  • High computer literacy in software programs, business apps, POS systems and other business tools and resources.
  • Direct experience owning and running a business with employees is a plus.  

Knowledge and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of business financing practices and procedures including:  

  • Preparation and presentation of sound business plans. 
  • Financial analysis, use of financial information to analyze business performance and to make recommendations for necessary actions.
  • Establishment and maintenance of business accounting systems.
  • Analysis of financing options for business start-ups or expansions, and preparation of business financing packages.
  • Knowledge of loan programs and loan guarantees for business; Venture Capital investing, business taxation and business incentives.
  • Proficiency in preparing and presenting accurate written and oral summaries of financial analyses.
  • Experience with grant management and reporting, preferably with federal agencies.
  • Ability to manage portfolios of a variety of projects involving technical, administrative, management, and personnel support.  
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data from diverse data sources and produce reports to display information in a variety of forms

Working Conditions:

GNDC has a collaborative work culture that is positive, energetic, highly productive, and fun. This position will  report directly to the GNDC Executive Director. GNDC staff are currently part-time remote and in-office. This  position will be mainly in-office the first six months, with remote work/in office hybrid being re-evaluated  after that period. The work week is generally Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm. Local, regional, and state travel is  required. This position is based in Wolf Point, Montana.  


This is a full-time salaried exempt position. Salary $48,000 – $52,000 DOE. Benefits package includes 11 paid  holidays, and 17 paid days off, 100% employer paid health insurance for employee (dental and vision  optional), SIMPLE IRA employer contribution match, and a monthly phone stipend.
